DOG FENCE WIRE GAUGES - JUST THE FACTS

STRANDED COPPER CORE

The copper core is made up of 7 smaller strands of copper and was used by Petsafe years ago and found to create problems for different reasons.

SHOULD NO LONGER BE USED.

SOLID COPPER CORE

This is one solid copper core and is the only type core that should be used for both your underground and or above ground dog fence systems.

INSULATION

This is the protective covering over the copper core of the wire. The very best insulation is Polyethylene (type PE) . Similar to the black plastic material used in bed-liners of pick-up trucks. If a retailer does not state the insulation type, ASK them.

Insulation thickness is measured in Mil’s. One Mil is 1/1000 of an inch.

Most retailers selling dog fence systems have wire from 20 to 30 mil thick.
Our 20 & 18 Gauge wire has a 35 mil thick insulation, much thicker then 30
mil and our 16 & 14 gauge wire has a 45 Mil thick insulation.

WHAT TRAVELS ON THIS WIRE ?

In the majority of systems such as Innotek, Petsafe, and Sportdog, it is an AM radio signal.

DOES THE SIGNAL TRAVEL BETTER ON LARGER WIRE ?

No, basically the signal will travel the same on 20 gauge wire as it does on 14 Gauge wire.

WHY USE 18, 16, OR THE PROFESSIONAL 14 GAUGE WIRE ?

The heavier gauge wire is used to prevent the many problems that arise to wire causing complete system shut down. It can range from animals of every, and all sizes, from a mole to a bear chewing the wire. Wire can be very easily repaired, if broken with a piece of wire and 2 splices, however the very difficult task of locating the break sometimes can make the break and repair near impossible.

I have read many remarks by retailers who tell customers that the much
heavier 16 or 14 gauge wire is not needed and is a waste of money. These
retailers evidently know nothing about fence systems or wire. I speak with over
45 years of electrical wire experience and am currently a Licenced Electrical
Contractor.

Common sense, is I guess not common, when it comes to their statements. The
larger 16 & 14 gauge wire is many times stronger then 20 or 18 gauge, and the
only reason that someone would not recommend it , is because they just are
unable to offer it at the low price we sell it for. You see we have it made
special for Monell Pets.

WHY DO PROFESSIONAL INSTALLERS ONLY USE 14 GAUGE WIRE?

Professional installers recognize the need to use a wire gauge which cannot be chewed, as 20 & 18 gauge wire can, by animals as small as a squirrel. I have seen a squirrel chew through my 20 gauge deck lighting wire in 6 different locations. The strength of 14 gauge wire gives customers an installation that is time tested and proven to last a lifetime. Pro-installers do the job 1 time and never need to come back to repair damages.

We believe in giving the customers all the honest fact about systems and the wire used with them. We are know for our honesty and excellent communication and are happy
to answer questions.

In closing of our above statements I will have to say that the comparison of 18, 16, and 14 gauge wire would be , GOOD, BETTER, and very BEST . We recommend up-grading all systems rather then using 20 gauge wire.

Lightning Protection for Dog Fence Systems

         is it really needed ??

Many customers have told me that they already have Lightning protection on
the main electrical panel, or have Surge protection strips like the kind used for computer
systems which they could use on their Dog Containment System.

These devices, while true may afford some protection to the dog fence
transmitter from spikes in voltage to house wiring, do nothing to protect the
transmitter from the boundary wire which is running around your entire property
acting as a Big Antenna saying ”HIT ME” to the natural occurrence of Lightning.
If there is one thing I have learned in years of dealing with electricity and
Lightning as an Electrical Contractor, is that it can do things that cannot always be
explained or even believed.

I cannot recommend more strongly the need for Lightning and Surge
protection specially made for ALL underground electric fence for dogs, regardless of make or model. Each and every week we are contacted by customers
that needs a new Transmitters because theirs no longer is operating.

One customer contacted me to say that he now has large black marks all
over his sheetrock where his transmitter used to be located as lightning hit his
boundary wire and totally destroyed his transmitter. When asked if he had a
Lightning protector he said no, but would I please sell him one with his new
transmitter!

Lightning Protectors cost between $25 to $49 and in most cases “you get
what you pay for”. The more expensive lightning protectors protect better than
the less expensive unit.

As one of the oldest Dog Fence Internet retailers my partner Simone and I are always willing to help each and every customer with any question or advice we can be of help with. For which Lightning Protector might be best for both your system and pocket book, please email us or give us a call.

Isn’t it true, that when we have sore muscles and aching bones, a heating pad or sitting near the fire soothes our souls?

Well the same hold true for your pets. Have you ever notices how your cats and dogs always lays in front of the fire or in the sunshine through a window? Heated Pet Beds and Pads are ideal for your dog or cats comfort for any aged pet, but especially the older ones will be most appreciative.

Snug as a Bug

Your Pet’s Sun Spot!
Have you ever wondered why your pet seeks out the sun spot in your house to nap? Their body temperature is higher than yours and while your air conditioned home is just right for you, it is not for your pet.

Why only 102°F when in use? Any warmer and your pet won’t use it. 102°F is the ideal body temperature for cats and dogs. Since a pet’s fur acts as an insulator, K&H products have a thermostat that senses when the unit reached this temperature and maintains it for maximum pet comfort.

Body temperature warmth eases muscle pain and encourages circulation for active or arthritic pets. It’s why many vets recommend & use K&H Lectro-Kennel heated pads in their clinics & prescribe them for recuperating pets.

These components make up the PIF-300 System.

What makes this system very popular is its ease of installation. All that needs to be done is to locate the transmitter indoors in the center of the area that you want your pet contained in. You can then use the transmitter and collar receiver to mark the correct location for flag placement. Follow the simple Petsafe instructions for installation and training. Fit the collar to your pets neck, and you are ready to begin training your pet or pets.

OPERATION

The transmitter puts out an AM radio signal for a maximum of 90’ in all directions. Your dog wears a collar receiver. As long as this collar receiver receives the signal from the transmitter, the dog will get no correction. When the dog approaches the maximum 90’ distance the collar will tone. If the dog continues he will get a static correction to whatever degree the collar receiver has been set to by the owner.

PRO’s to the system.

Ease of installation

Collar receiver has 6 levels of correction

Can be transported easily for use, as with an RV or vacation trips

Can be used for large cats and Medium to large size dogs

Can contain more pets with purchase of additional collar receivers and larger area with purchase of more transmitters.

Con’s to the Wireless Fence

System only works in a complete Circle 90’ in ratios.

Collar Receiver may not be strong enough for large dogs. Stubborn dogs or dogs larger than 35 Lbs should use the Petsafe Stubborn Dog Fence

Should not be used on dogs under 10 lbs.

Will not work properly on sloping property

Only 1 choice of collars
